FWPCOT3301 – Trim trees using a pole saw. This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to use a fuel or battery powered pole saw to trim tree branches within safe height and angle limits.

The unit applies to individuals who operate pole saws to trim tree branches as part of arboriculture, forestry, agriculture, conservation and land management, local government, emergency services and other government agency operations.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

This course is suitable for persons currently employed in industry with a requirement to obtain a Statement of Attainment that covers basic chainsaw maintenance and trimming and cutting felled trees. Whilst students are not assumed to have any specific pre-existing knowledge in maintaining or operating a chainsaw, students will typically have completed their workplace orientation and induction training and be familiar with foundation concepts relating to work health and safety including identifying hazards in the workplace, using PPE and completing safe work method statements. Generally most students will have also operated a pole saw in the past. If an individual does not meet these requirements they may be deemed ineligible for short course delivery.

While there are no pre-requisites for this course, you will need to have sufficient English language skills to complete the competency-based training.

You will also be required to undertake practical training and assessments which will entail starting a pole saw, holding, and cutting with a pole saw.

All participants must be aged 16 years or above on the day of the course.

ALL ATTENDEES ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR WORK-APPROPRIATE CLOTHING AND STEEL-CAP BOOTS TO THE COURSE

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and pole saws may be brought along to training. For those who do not own this equipment, or do not wish to bring their own, PPE items and pole saws will be supplied.

Courses cover outcomes required to carry out maintenance & operation of a pole saw and to cut & trim trees using a pole saw. Topics such as (but not limited to), participating in planning & preparing for maintenance, conducting pole saw maintenance, maintenance records, preparing for trimming & cutting, visually assessing trees/shrubs, planning for & conducting trimming & cutting are all covered within the course.

Successful participants will receive a ‘Statement of Attainment’ with the ‘Units of Competency’ listed above, issued by Health Safety Education, that can be used to meet legislative, regulatory and workplace requirements in their relevant fields of employment.

This course will be delivered firstly in a classroom environment to cover the theory aspects and then move to an outdoor area for completion of the practical components.

There are no pre-course study requirements to complete this course and all resources required on the day will be supplied.

A variety of assessment methods are utilised to ensure you develop the required skills and knowledge and to keep the course a practical, hands-on-learning experience. These methods are:

• Practical Assessments delivered under workplace conditions

All assessments are carried out in English.

You must be physically capable of starting, holding and using a pole saw for sustained periods of time in the practical component of the course.

If you are unhappy about any assessment result, then seeking a re-assessment is usually the first strategy.
