The Pole Saw can be a dangerous tool in the workplace and around the home.  Trained & certified persons generally have a greater understanding of operations and safety.  This usually results in greater productivity & a reduction of injuries & accidents. It also assists in meeting WHS requirements.

Information about the course

FWPCOT3301 – Trim trees using a pole saw. This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to use a fuel or battery powered pole saw to trim tree branches within safe height and angle limits.

The unit applies to individuals who operate pole saws to trim tree branches as part of arboriculture, forestry, agriculture, conservation and land management, local government, emergency services and other government agency operations.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for persons currently employed in industry with a requirement to obtain a Statement of Attainment that covers basic chainsaw maintenance and trimming and cutting felled trees. Whilst students are not assumed to have any specific pre-existing knowledge in maintaining or operating a chainsaw, students will typically have completed their workplace orientation and induction training and be familiar with foundation concepts relating to work health and safety including identifying hazards in the workplace, using PPE and completing safe work method statements. Generally most students will have also operated a pole saw in the past. If an individual does not meet these requirements they may be deemed ineligible for short course delivery.

While there are no pre-requisites for this course, you will need to have sufficient English language skills to complete the competency-based training.

You will also be required to undertake practical training and assessments which will entail starting a pole saw, holding, and cutting with a pole saw.

All participants must be aged 16 years or above on the day of the course.

Duration

Our Operate a Polesaw course is a one-day course. Please view course listings on the home page of this website for specific start/finish times and venues.

The hours are generally 8:00am to 5:00pm, but students should refer to their specific course listing on the homepage of the Duff Consulting website for specific times and venues as this can sometimes differ to meet client needs.

Physical Requirements – what to wear on the day

ALL ATTENDEES ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR WORK-APPROPRIATE CLOTHING AND STEEL-CAP BOOTS TO THE COURSE

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and pole saws may be brought along to training. For those who do not own this equipment, or do not wish to bring their own, PPE items and pole saws will be supplied.

Morning tea, tea and coffee will be supplied. Participants are to provide their own lunch or purchase it on the day.

There is no expected home study associated with this course.

Course Outcome

Courses cover outcomes required to carry out maintenance & operation of a pole saw and to cut & trim trees using a pole saw. Topics such as (but not limited to), participating in planning & preparing for maintenance, conducting pole saw maintenance, maintenance records, preparing for trimming & cutting, visually assessing trees/shrubs, planning for & conducting trimming & cutting are all covered within the course.

Successful participants will receive a ‘Statement of Attainment’ with the ‘Units of Competency’ listed above, issued by Health Safety Education, that can be used to meet legislative, regulatory and workplace requirements in their relevant fields of employment.

Cost

Duff Consulting charge $428.00 per person regardless of numbers and location. A 5% manual invoicing fee will be applied to any participants who do not pay online at the time of booking.

How we will deliver the course

This course will be delivered firstly in a classroom environment to cover the theory aspects and then move to an outdoor area for completion of the practical components.

There are no pre-course study requirements to complete this course and all resources required on the day will be supplied.

Assessment Requirements

A variety of assessment methods are utilised to ensure you develop the required skills and knowledge and to keep the course a practical, hands-on-learning experience. These methods are:

  • Theory Questions
  • Practical Assessments delivered under workplace conditions

All assessments are carried out in English.

You must be physically capable of starting, holding and using a pole saw for sustained periods of time in the practical component of the course.

If you are unhappy about any assessment result, then seeking a re-assessment is usually the first strategy. If you are still unhappy about the assessment process or result, then the Complaints and Appeals Process may be invoked. We offer recognition of existing skills and knowledge, please refer to the Student Handbook for more information.

Requirements for Completion

You must attend 100% of this Pole saw training course and satisfactorily complete all the assessment tasks. If you feel you may need support to complete the learning or assessment tasks either because of a literacy issue, a learning difficulty or a physical disability, please let us know and we may be able to make adjustments to our learning and assessment processes.
